Almost everyone likes attention whether they will admit it or not. We may not all want the same kind, but it feels good when we are appreciated for who we are or something we have done.
Whether it is a musical accomplishment, a creative endeavor, or conquering a milestone like losing weight, or having a birthday, it's generally affirming to hear other people notice.
However the need for this varies greatly among different people.
Some need constant assurance for every single aspect of their life. Others are happy to share only the moments that feel larger or more important to them.
And then there are the exhibitionists! Those people who will go above and beyond to be noticed. The ones willing to do almost anything as long as it gets attention. Good or bad. These include chronic liars, acting out for shock effects, choosing weird when nothing else works.
These people annoy me, but I try to understand what makes them this way. What is so lacking in their lives that they need to make fools of themselves?
Some comedians turn this into an act that puts food in their mouths. Some politicians use it to replace authentic credentials. But there are people who are loved, well fed, and monetarily comfortable that resort to it too. Why?
